Giant fruits and yachts dock at Teesside

23 February 2005

The University of Teesside is hosting two, very different, events on Thursday 24 February.

Event One - 12pm – 3pm, launch of the Student Volunteer Project

University of Teesside students will be dressing as giant fruit and vegetables in order to promote healthy eating and encourage fellow students to sign up to a new scheme designed to help older people in the community. The event will take place at the main hall of the Centuria Building, off Victoria Road, Middlesbrough.

With an ever-ageing population, the NHS has highlighted the importance of caring for older people as a priority. To help with this, the University of Teesside’s School of Health & Social Care is launching the a community volunteer project which will see students volunteer to work with older members of the community.

The scheme will be launched during National Student Volunteers Week (Monday 21 February to Sunday 27 February).

Matthew Wright, School of Health & Social Care Assistant and co-ordinator of the project, said: “The University Community Volunteers Project is supporting this new scheme which will be a benefit to both students and the older people in different ways. The older people will receive practical help, up-to-date advice on healthy living, improve their social well being, fitness and be more involved in the community. While the students will gain important experience of working with older people, improve their communication, organisational and social skills and overcome some of the stereotypical views they may hold.”

Members of the media are welcome to attend the event at 12pm to take photographs and interview the participants.

Event Two - 6pm, free public lecture

A special, free talk is being held at the University of Teesside to explain the design and construction of the world’s largest yacht, the Mirabella V, on Thursday 24 February, at 6pm, at the Centuria Building, Victoria Road, Middlesbrough.

The talk will be delivered by Paul Johnson, the Project Manager of the Mirabella V Yacht, and will outline the extensive design and build process to create the luxurious 247 foot, single mast yacht.

The talk, which has been organised by the Teesside Section of the Institute and Measurement & Control, will be of particular relevance to engineers and those with an interest in boating.
