The war on terror spotlighted at Teesside

08 March 2005

The foreign policy of President George W Bush and the ‘war on terror’ will be explored in a free public lecture at the University of Teesside on Tuesday 22 March at 5pm.

Entitled Illegal but Legitimate: a Dubious Doctrine of the Times, the lecture will be delivered by live video link from the University of Edinburgh.

This lecture will be delivered by the internationally renowned academic, Professor Noam Chomsky, and relayed to the Large Lecture Hall, H0.01, Centuria Building, Victoria Road, Middlesbrough. It is open to staff, students and members of the public and will finish at around 6.30pm.

Noam Chomsky is a leading critic of USA foreign policy and has been described by the New York Times as “arguably the most important intellectual alive.” His lecture will:

Examine the impact of President Bush’s neo-conservative strategies on international order and security. Review the reasons for, and the impact of, the Iraq war and occupation. Explore the motives behind the ‘war on terrorism’.

The talk will be introduced and chaired by Peter Smith, former Principal Lecturer in Political Studies at the University of Teesside. He said: “This is a rare chance to see and hear one of the most knowledgeable political experts alive today. Chomsky has been a stern critic of US imperialism since the ten year war in Vietnam. More recently, he has led the world-wide opposition to the invasion and occupation of Iraq.”
