Good news for Teesside from funding chiefs

10 March 2005

The University of Teesside is celebrating a “good settlement” after the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) announced its provisional allocations to fund university teaching and research during the 2005-06 academic year.

The University of Teesside has been given an additional £2.8m, mainly to support an expansion of 684 student places on its foundation degrees. Teesside has pioneered the new vocational two-year full time and three year part-time foundation degrees with courses ranging from police training and education, chemical technology and health-related programmes of study.

The provisional settlement from HEFCE also includes a grant of £4.7m to support its widening participation and student retention - up by £800,000 on last year to support these activities.

The total allocation for teaching for the University of Teesside during the next academic year is £41.9M

Professor Graham Henderson, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Teesside, said: “We welcome the settlement announced by the Funding Council today (Thursday 10 March). The extra funding for teaching will enable us to expand our foundation degrees and build on our reputation as one of the leading universities for opening up higher education opportunities to all sections of the community.”
