New Labour’s Public Services policies spotlighted

29 April 2005

The future of the UK’s public services is central to the current election campaign, with contrasting policies promoted by all three main parties. By Wednesday 11 May the identity of the next government will be known. On the same day a free public lecture will take place at the University of Teesside, exploring the current government’s approach to the management and provision of public services.

Entitled ‘A Third Way To Nowhere? New Labour and Public Services’ the lecture will be delivered by Professor John Wilson, Dean of the University’s Teesside Business School. It will take place from 6.30pm - 8.00pm, in the University’s Centuria Building, Victoria Road, Middlesbrough.

Professor Wilson said: “A key issue for the Labour Government since being elected in 1997 is the quality of public services, an issue that’s currently at the forefront of debate. This lecture will examine and reflect upon the overall approach adopted by Labour towards the provision and management of public services since 1997.” Professor John Wilson joined the University as Dean of Teesside Business School in 2000. He is a professionally qualified member of the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy and the Chartered Institute of Marketing and has an academic background in politics and economics. Professor Wilson previously worked at Lancashire County Council and Liverpool John Moores University, where he started as a lecturer, progressing to Deputy Director of Liverpool Business School. He has published extensively in the field of public service management.

Refreshments will be served from 6.00pm. For more information or to reserve a place call Sarah Irving on 01642 384255 or e-mail alumni.office@tees.ac.uk
