Middlesbrough Mela Goes Global

12 July 2005

The University of Teesside is broadcasting the sights and sounds of the annual Middlesbrough Mela (Sunday 17 July at Albert Park) live on the internet for the third year running.  The website, www.boromela.co.uk makes the celebration of Asian music, culture and food accessible to anyone with access to the internet.

As well as the on-line webcast, student volunteers will be ensuring that a giant 16 square metre screen, positioned near the stage, is constantly beaming out images of the event to the crowd. Other new innovations for this year include ‘head-cam’ – a webcam mounted onto a baseball cap so the wearer can roam the crowd capturing the essence of the Mela - and a facility where any visitor with a digital camera can have their images  uploaded onto the website by taking their camera to the the bandstand. The internet activities for the Mela are managed by the University of Teesside’s Department of Academic Enterprise.  For more information about further initiatives please contact Steve Thompson, Community Media Co-ordinator, Department of Academic Enterprise, University of Teesside on 01642 384567 or email s.d.thompson@tees.ac.uk
