Helen’s top job

By Clearing

09 August 2005

Helen Smithson has clinched a top job as a radiographer at James Cook University Hospital after completing a BSc (Hons) Diagnostic Radiography degree at the University of Teesside.

Helen, 21, from Eston in Middlesbrough, said: “My mum works at James Cook Hospital as a Health Care Assistant and she always thought that the radiography department looked interesting. She encouraged me to consider it as a future career so I decided to see for myself and arranged for some work experience there. I really enjoyed it and agreed with my mum that it could make a great career.

“I joined the course at Teesside, where we have class based lectures and also spend about half the time in placements. I spent most of my placement time at Darlington Memorial Hospital, where I eventually got a part time job. I applied for a job as a radiographer at James Cook while I was still studying, so I was really shocked when I got it!

“The course taught me everything I needed to know and the School of Health & Social Care building is really modern and up to date. A new mocked up radiography room is included, which will be invaluable for new students.”

Helen, whose older sister Joanne studied accountancy and law at the University of Teesside, began her new job in August.
