How do businesses work with the local community?

02 November 2005

Bill Midgley, President of the British Chambers of Commerce, will deliver the annual Teesside Business School lecture at the University of Teesside on 9 November.

A reception begins at 5.30pm in Teesside Business School, Second Floor, in the University’s Clarendon Building. Entertainment will be provided by world-famous jazz saxophonist Alan Barnes. The lecture, entitled, ‘The Responsibility of Business to the Community’, then starts at 6.45pm in the Innovation Centre, off Stephenson Street, followed by questions from the audience. The lecture will be over by 8pm.

Bill Midgley said: “I very much welcome the invitation from Teesside Business School to give their Annual Lecture and look forward to addressing the issue of the responsibility of business to the community. Businesses contribute enormously to their local communities, being a driver of productivity and regeneration, paying taxes and employing local people. However, I intend to question whether they do enough and if they can and should do more.”

Professor John Wilson, Dean of Teesside Business School, said: “The Business School is very proud of its links with the North East Chamber of Commerce so we are particularly pleased that the President of the British Chambers has kindly agreed to present the Annual Lecture. The theme of Mr Midgley’s lecture is of particular interest to the School, the University and, of course, the wider community.”

There will be an opportunity to photograph Mr Midgley with Professor John Wilson at 6.30pm on Wednesday 9 November in Teesside Business School, Second Floor, Clarendon Building. For more details please contact Stephen Laing on 01642 342962 or e-mail s.laing@tees.ac.uk
