Deborah’s first class science success

21 November 2005

Juggling the roles of a full-time student and single mother can be demanding. However, it hasn’t stopped Deborah Flitcroft from achieving a First Class degree and winning an academic prize from the University of Teesside.

Deborah, 33, from Billingham, has earned a First Class BSc (Hons) degree in Applied Science and Forensic Investigation. She returned to education after working a variety of jobs, including working in a pet shop and a bank.

Her success on the course has resulted in winning an academic prize, The Rob Cummins Memorial Prize which she will receive at her graduation today. Now training to be a physics teacher, Deborah said: “The degree offered me more physics than the other science courses at Teesside, while providing a broad base of knowledge and practical skills. Even though lots of people who do this course want to go into forensic science, there are lots of other options available.

“The facilities at the University were very good. Teesside is always putting money back into the University and investing in new equipment. The laboratories are up-to-date and the staff are very helpful. You can see them as often as you need to and they go out of their way to support their students.”
