Trudy is a First Class student of the year

21 November 2005

Trudy Lacey has enjoyed two graduations from the University of Teesside this week. On Tuesday she received her First Class BSc (Hons) degree in Promoting Practice Effectiveness (Cancer Care) at Middlesbrough Town Hall. She also received the prize for best overall student on the course.

And Trudy returned to the Town Hall today, to collect the Cecil M Yuill Award for highest achievement in any field of study. This award makes Trudy the University’s Student of the year.

Trudy, 32, from Saltburn, is a Clinical Nurse Specialist for lung cancer at The James Cook University Hospital. In her role, Trudy supports lung cancer patients and their families and offers advice on all aspects of their disease management.

She achieved the degree after four years of part-time study. Trudy said: “I’m still getting my head around getting a First, never mind this award! I’m genuinely surprised, my aim was just to pass the degree, I never thought I’d reach anything at this level. It’s one of my biggest achievements, both professionally and personally.”

Trudy started her nurse training aged 17 at the University Hospital of North Tees, following a lifelong ambition. After various posts in acute and respiratory medicine, Trudy progressed to her current role. She enrolled on the degree to develop her knowledge of cancer care. Trudy said: “Studying part-time is hard work, particularly when you’ve started a new role like I did. I’ve had to make sacrifices with friends and family. My University tutor helped, she was really supportive and encouraging.”

Trudy’s proud parents Elaine and Gerry attended both graduations.
