Christmas cracker for University

22 December 2005

The University of Teesside has received an early Christmas present, courtesy of the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE), with the allocation of nearly 600 additional full-time student places for 2006-2008. The 590 additional student numbers is the highest allocation for all of the North-East Universities and the second highest in the UK.

Professor Graham Henderson, University of Teesside Vice-Chancellor, said: “This is great news from HEFCE. It is clearly a vote of confidence in the University of Teesside and reflects the outcome of a long period of successful growth, which has seen student numbers double in a decade. We have demonstrated that we can deliver high quality programmes responding to changing student demand and meeting regional economic needs.

“A significant part of the expansion will be geared to increasing the Foundation Degrees we deliver in partnership with Further Education (FE) colleges, all involving work-based experience.”

The extra students will be split between undergraduate programmes and foundation degrees. The undergraduate programmes are: Creative and Cultural Studies, Computing and Forensic Science. The foundation degrees are: Creative and Cultural Studies, Construction Engineering, Professional and other business services. Some of these courses will be delivered in the University’s Partnership FE Colleges.
