Here comes the MirrorMask

24 January 2006

A 15 year old girl works for her family circus, but longs to run away and join real life. The girl, Helena, enters a strange journey into the Dark Lands, a fantastic landscape filled with giants, Monkey birds and dangerous sphinxes.  She searches for the MirrorMask, an object of enormous power which is her only hope of escape.

Helena’s perilous journey is the story of MirrorMask, a new production from the Jim Henson Company.  MirrorMask will be screened during Animex, an annual animation and computer games festival organised by the University of Teesside. Animex takes place from Monday 6 - Saturday 11 February. MirrorMask combines live action with digital animation, set in a computer generated landscape.  The cast include Rob Brydon, the Marion and Geoff star who has recently starred alongside Steve Coogan in the film A Cock & Bull Story, Gina McKee, who received a Best Actress BAFTA for her role in Our Friends in the North as well as character voices by Lenny Henry, Dora Bryan and Stephen Fry.

Animex, Middlesbrough’s International Festival of Animation and Computer Games, is now in its seventh year.  The screening of MirrorMask takes place at 8pm on Saturday 11 February at ARC, Dovecot Street, Stockton.  MirrorMask is a PG certificate. MirrorMask will be released in the UK by Tartan Films on Friday 3 March.

MirrorMask is acclaimed graphic novel artist Dave McKean’s first feature as director, co-written with frequent collaborator Neil Gaiman.
