Log on and calculate

02 March 2006

From September 2006, the University of Teesside will offer a generous package of bursaries and scholarships to full-time undergraduate students. And a new on-line funding calculator has been launched to give more information.

Potential students can log onto the funding calculator on the University of Teesside’s web site. The calculator can be found at www.tees.ac.uk/funding

Chris Turner, the University’s Student Funding Development Officer, said: “The calculator includes very simple questions, for example about your household income. By answering them you can find out what you will be entitled to. And if prospective students or their parents have further enquires they can contact our team of student finance advisers.”

Chris, 35, from Middlesbrough, is touring sixth forms and Further Education Colleges throughout the Tees Valley, Durham and North Yorkshire, describing the bursary and scholarship package and answering all questions.

Chris added: “Some students don’t have all the details of the package so I’m addressing that. All University education is now free at the point of delivery; no-one has to pay upfront. From September 2006, students can learn first and pay back when they are earning. We also now have the highest level of non-repayable student funding for a long time.

“Students will only have to repay a very small amount of money, nine per cent of anything earned over £15,000. For example a former student earning £18,000 per year would pay back £5.19 per week.”
