Graeme operates to a high level at Teesside

20 November 2006

Graeme Measor’s nursing career started as a scrub nurse in operating theatres. This inspired him to play a greater role in surgical interventions.

So he enrolled on a new part-time degree course at the University of Teesside which would enable him to do this. Graeme, 32, from Hartlepool, will receive his First Class BSc (Hons) Surgical Care Practitioner degree today. He will also be presented with the Su Blewitt Award for best overall student . Graeme is in the first cohort of students to graduate from this degree.

Graeme said: "As a theatre scrub nurse, the only career progression open to me was management, which would mean less clinical input. I wanted to further my career, but wanted more clinical involvement with patients. Fortunately, the University of Teesside had just developed the Surgical Care Practitioner degree programme. I was interviewed and fortunate enough to be selected."

Graeme added: "The facilities at the School of Health & Social Care are brilliant. The lecture halls and clinical skills areas are excellent as well. I enjoyed the musculoskeletal module so much that I was allowed to help teach it to later groups of students!

"I'm hoping to do some more teaching and some research into different types of treatments and procedures. But for now, I just want to consolidate my skills and keep on learning and building on what I learned while studying. I'd definitely recommend the University to other colleagues in the NHS who want to increase their knowledge and skills."
