Local government performance spotlighted

30 November 2006

The performance of local government will be spotlighted in a free lecture at the University of Teesside on Wednesday 6 December. Entitled Leading and Measuring Improvement in Local Government, the lecture has been organised by the Public Management and Policy Association (PMPA), in their first lecture held outside London.

The lecture will take place in Room 7, second floor, Teesside Business School, Clarendon Building, from 5.45pm-7.15pm. It will be delivered by Colin Moore, Chief Executive of Redcar & Cleveland Council and Professor John Wilson, Head of Salford Business School. Barbara Roche, former Labour MP for Hornsey & Wood Green and a previous Home Office Minister, will chair the lecture. All three will be available for questions from the audience afterwards. Refreshments will be available from 5.00pm.

Dr Michael Macaulay, Head of the Centre for Public Services Management, said: “This is an extremely prestigious event as it’s the first year in which a PMPA lecture has been held in the North East. Since 1997 the Labour Government has emphasised the need to improve public services, not least those provided by local government.

“Considerable efforts have been made, including external assessment arrangements to encourage and measure improvements, particularly Comprehensive Performance Assessment. The lecture will consider the success of these efforts and place them into the wider context of leadership and service improvement in local government. It is aimed at anyone who is interested in the measurement and modernisation of local government.”
