Leanne’s prize winning poncho board game

05 January 2007

A promotional board game that doubles up as a rain poncho has proved an award winning concept Leanne O’Hara.

Leanne, 23, from Huddersfield, graduate won a prestigious Designers and Art Directors (D&AD) award while in the final year of her BA (Hons) Graphic Design degree at the University of Teesside. The competition brief was to design a promotional product for a record company at outdoor music festivals. Leanne designed a game, based upon children’s classic Twister – instead of using colours, the game features pictures of the company’s artists. Made out of heavy duty material, the game could also act as a mat and be folded up into a waterproof poncho.

Leanne, said: “Entering the D&AD competition was a lot of fun and I really enjoyed creating my designs and the prototype poncho. I won £400 in prize money which I spent on a trip to France and some new clothes.

“I really enjoyed my course. We covered a lot of areas and it gave me lot of freedom and choice to learn more about things I was interested in. The tutors were always helpful and gave us loads of advice. There was a lot of hard work but it was worth it and is paying off now.”

Leanne is the daughter of Christine and the late Patrick O’Hara and attended King James’ School, Huddersfield College and the Highfields Annexe of Huddersfield Technical College.
