Students’ design work is baked to perfection

28 September 2007

Fresh from the oven and ready to be tasted by the public – design master’s students from the University of Teesside are showcasing their work at a Middlesbrough exhibition.

Entitled ‘Fresh from the Oven,’ the exhibition is based on collaboration and the sharing of creative ideas. It features a number of different specialisms including graphic design, spatial design, fine art, product design and design marketing.

The students’ work will be on display at the Python Gallery at Royal Middlehaven House, Gosford Street, Middlesbrough. The exhibition is open from Monday to Friday, 9.30am to 5.00pm until Friday 5 October.

One of the exhibits consists of three paintings entitled ‘Pink', 'Blue' and 'Orange'. These were produced by Khaleel Akhter, 25, from Middlesbrough.  Khaleel has just finished his MA Design at the University.

Khaleel (pictured) said: ‘My paintings are in response to current global issues such as climate change and poverty. The figures in each painting - man, woman and child - are wearing headphones, which creates a visual barrier between them and what is happening around them. I wanted the images to echo how we react to what we see in the media, it is easy to cocoon yourself from these issues when they do not affect you directly.’

Michael Hall, Programme Leader for Postgraduate Studies in Art and Design, said: ‘The combination of skills, ideas, knowledge and innovation shown here are emerging from an active and productive melting pot for creativity, generating projects that are multi-faceted, considered in their entirety and inspired. Several students from the course were recently short-listed for the RSA Design Directions Student Design Awards for a collaborative project.’
