Pirate project on display at ExpoTees

10 March 2008

A small pirate town is under construction in the centre of Middlesbrough. This town, however, is of the cyber variety - part of the final year project by Computing student Paul Haynes.

Paul’s pirate project is one of many to be displayed at the University’s annual ExpoTees exhibition, which showcases the final year projects of all students from the School of Computing. Over 60 projects will be featured at ExpoTees, which is free, open to the public and held on Tuesday 18 March from 1.00pm to 6.00pm, at the Athena Building on Southfield Rd.

Paul, 24, is originally from Wolvey, near Coventry and a BA (Hons) Creative Digital Media student. His project has created a new level for an existing computer game, Unreal Tournament 3. Paul said: ‘I’ve combined level design with new found new skills in modelling; it’s really got my imagination going. I chose the pirate town theme as it’s different from the science fiction route that players of this computer game would normally explore.

‘I’ve devised a map which consists of a small pirate town, made up of many models ranging from buildings, stone ruins, palm trees and a shipwreck down on the beach. There’s a big difference between playing a computer game and creating your own material, making your own environment. When I graduate I’d like to work in the computer games industry, either in the UK or internationally.’

Barry Hebron, organiser of ExpoTees, said: ‘ExpoTees has something for everyone. If you're headhunting for talent, be they Web Designers and Developers, IT or Computing specialists, Computer Animators and Games Developers then ExpoTees is for you. If you're at school or college and you're wondering if any of these careers are for you, then come and chat to the students, and explore with them; what motivates them, why they chose the path they are on, and what they aim to achieve.

‘Or maybe you're just curious about the direction the next generation digital expertise is taking. Discover for yourself the place ‘where art meets computer science’ is here in Middlesbrough at the University of Teesside.’
