Kick off with a course in Football History

Football fans are being targeted in a drive by the University of Teesside to get local people into study.

A new short course in Football History starts on Tuesday 31 October. It will run from 6pm to 8pm over seven weeks at the Kader Youth & Community Centre in Trimdon Avenue, Acklam, Middlesbrough.

Students will find-out about the development of the modern game from the 19th Century to the present day. This will also look at the origins of football clubs, the establishment of the Football League and Premiership and examine the social context in which football involved.

The course fee is £22.50, with concessions available. Participants will be able to use the University's facilities, including the library and its high-tech learning resources. Successful students will get a University Certificate and credits towards a degree or diploma course if they wish to progress to full programmes of study.

The Football History course is part of a new Progression Pathways Project by the Middlesbrough-based university and its Further Education and Sixth Form College partners in the region. The Workers' Education Association and the region's Careers Service are also involved.

Pauline Lynn, from the University's Centre for Lifelong Learning, says: "We have support from both the Further Education Funding Council and Higher Education Funding Council for England for our new Outreach Programme. Courses are being offered in a wide range of areas - from Football History to Women's Studies and Information Technology. So far the most popular courses have been held at Church House, Ingleby Barwick, and the South Bank Women's Centre, but we will be broadening the number of Outreach Centres as we add more short courses."
