25 June 2008

Expertise in crime scene investigation, forensics and policing from the University have been on display at the Association of Chief Police Officer’s Conference (ACPO) in Liverpool.

The University’s expertise has been captured in a three-minute extract filmed by ITN, as part of a one-hour film which will screened on a loop at the conference. Brian Rankin, Head of the University of Teesside’s Centre for Forensic Investigation is also President of the Forensic Science Society. He said: ‘Teesside is the only University that exhibited at this conference. We’re delighted to be invited as one of the leading UK Universities with regards to education in the crime scene and forensic arena.’

The University’s three-minute extract features trainee police officers from Cleveland Police who are enrolled on the University’s Foundation Degree in Police Studies, along with Crime Scene Science students. They are included in footage of a simulated murder investigation and the processes involved, starting with the corpse right through to court room. University of Teesside Senior Law lecturer Cath Crosby portrayed the victim, while her assailant’s trial took place in the University’s mock court room. The extract will also feature comments from the University’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Graham Henderson and Sean Price, Chief Constable of Cleveland Police.

Sean Price, Chief Constable of Cleveland Police said: ‘The University of Teesside is at the forefront of studies in providing courses in crime scene investigation, forensics and policing. I am delighted that my colleagues will have the opportunity of seeing just what a marvellous facility we have here in the North East.’
