Future Foods or Fashion Fad ?

18 October 2000

We are what we eat often depends on what is available on the supermarket shelves. The link between the medicinal effects of foods available now and in the future will be explored at a conference on future foods, being organised by the University of Teesside’s Food Technology Centre. The conference, entitled ‘Functional Foods: Future Foods or Fashion Fad?’ takes place on Tuesday 31 October at Tees Valley TEC, Queens Square, Middlesbrough, from 10.00am to 4.00pm.

Julia Macfarlane, from the Food Technology Centre said: “More and more new foods are coming into our supermarkets now, which claim to be more than just food. This conference will help people to understand the future success of functional foods such as ‘Benecol’ and ‘Flora Pro-activ’ margarines that claim to reduce your cholesterol through consumption.”

Topics to be discussed will include current products on the market, consumer safety, health claims on food packaging and EU developments. Speakers from organisations including Nestle, Unilever, Tetley and Governmental departments will take part. Registration begins at 10.00 and lunch is included. Fees are £90 plus VAT per delegate. For more details please call Julia Macfarlane on 01642 342441 or fax 01642 342508 or email: J.Macfarlane@tees.ac.uk
