Teesside duo head to Beijing

01 August 2008

A pair of our University sporting stars has headed for the Beijing Olympics with team GB.

Athlete Johanna Jackson, from New Marske, will be competing in the 20km Race Walk while part-time student Chris Newton is taking part in the Track Cycling Points Race.

Chris clinched a bronze medal in the Sydney Olympics in 2000. He is originally from Stockton-on-Tees and is a part-time student on the BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Science course. Johanna is taking the BA (Hons) Creative Digital Media degree.

Sport is a major part of our University Professor Graham Henderson, Vice-Chancellor, said: ‘All of us at the University are very proud of both Johanna and Chris. We wish them every success in Beijing. Sport is a major, and growing, part of our University and it is fantastic to know that we have talented members of our University community achieving these levels of excellence.
