First national ultrasound congress

04 September 2008

Two alumni of the School of Health & Social Care are the driving forces behind the inaugural National Point of Care Ultrasound Congress.

Bob Jarman (Consultant in Emergency Medicine, Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Gateshead) and Jim Connolly (Consultant in Emergency Medicine, Newcastle General Hospital) are both national experts in point-of-care ultrasound, having previously completed the School’s focused module in Emergency Ultrasound.

They are currently engaging with the Acute Admissions Unit/Pre-Assessment Echocardiography module.

The Congress on 5,6, and 7 November is the first of its kind for the UK and is a major coup for the North of England.

An exciting programme of workshops, discussions and keynote lectures delivered by national and international experts is being planned by the Scientific Committee which includes Simon Richards (Programme Leader, Medical Ultrasound, School of Health & Social Care) and Jane Benchley (Consultant in Emergency Medicine, Barnsley District Hospital).

All individuals, whatever specialty or profession, with an interest or practice in point-of-care ultrasound are encouraged to attend. Bob and Jim are hopeful that many delegates will be from the North to show support.

Expansion of the School’s medical ultrasound provision is underway with the development and design of an emergency ultrasound route, an additional route within the current programme.

Bob and Jim are working closely with the programme team to ensure that this route provides cutting-edge point-of-care ultrasound education and training.

The congress will be held at the internationally-acclaimed Baltic Centre for Contemporary Arts on the Newcastle Gateshead Quayside.
