Archive team help mark club's anniversary

18 September 2008

The British Steel Archive Project team, based at the University, is helping a Middlesbrough social club celebrate a special anniversary.

An exhibition is planned to mark the 110th anniversary of The Dorman’s Club in 2009 and a call has gone out for volunteers to help with the exhibition, along with photographs and memorabilia from past and present members.

To help get the ball rolling, the British Steel Archive Project team will be at The Dorman’s Club, Oxford Road, from 2.00pm to 4.00pm on Wednesday 24 September, when they would like to talk to current and former members about their memories of the club and working in the steel industry.

Partnership between the University and Teesside Archives The British Steel Archive Project, a partnership between the University and Teesside Archives, is helping to preserve an extensive collection of photographs, maps, ledgers, deeds and other documents tracing the history of the iron and steel industries on Teesside.

Other events which the British Steel Archive Project team will be attending include the Cleveland and Teesside Local History Society’s 40th anniversary conference at Middlesbrough College on Saturday 20 September and a Family History Day at Marton Country Club, Middlesbrough, organised by Cleveland, North Yorkshire and South Durham Family History Society, from 10.00am to 4.30pm on Saturday 27 September.

The Project team will also be involved in the Universal Beam Mill 50th Anniversary Celebrations at Corus Lackenby from 8 to 10 October, where they hope to speak to people about their experiences of working in the steel industry.
