Teesside set to surprise on TV screens

17 October 2008

A fluffy kitten and a balloon play surprising roles in two new television advertisements promoting the University.

'Surprise Yourself' is the message for viewers, with each 20-second TV advertisement having an unexpected ending.

In the first, a kitten emerges as an eggshell cracks, while in the other it is the man blowing up a balloon who bursts.

Both TV advertisements will be screened for four weeks on Channel Four and Tyne Tees from 20 October.

People are surprised by what they can achieve at Teesside Tommy Cawkwell, President of University's Students' Union, said: 'People do surprise themselves with what they can achieve at Teesside and I've surprised myself with the skills I've developed which have enabled me to grasp opportunities provided here, such as becoming President of the SU.'

The 25-year-old Criminology student, from Thirsk, added: 'The advertisements are very quirky and memorable and not what you would typically expect to see in a television advert for a university.

'We have a diverse demographic here at Teesside and the imaginative style of these advertisements will appeal to men and women, young and old.'

Poster designs featuring a still image from the kitten advertisement, along with another design showing tiger print paint oozing from a tube, are also now in place on billboards and bus shelters across the North East.

An intriguing invitation Helen Caswell, University Marketing Manager, said: 'The advertisements offer an intriguing invitation for students to find out more about what they can personally learn and achieve at the University of Teesside.'

Creative agency The Bridge were behind the concept and design of the advertisements.
