Encased in glass - for Children in Need!

12 November 2008

Three men encased in glass – no it’s not David Blaine wannabes – it’s a live 24-hour endurance radio broadcast for charity.

The trio taking part are all University students, and will broadcast live for 24 hours on the University’s radio station, UTRN (University of Teesside Radio Network) to raise money for the BBC’s annual Children in Need appeal.

Media degrees The students, who are on all media-related degrees at the University, are Tom Campbell, Marc Lambert-Clarke and Adam Wilkinson. They will be taking playlist requests from the public from 8pm on Thursday 13 November to 8pm on Friday 14 November, when the BBC broadcast their appeal. The student presenters will be based in a glass display pod on the ground floor of the Athena Building, which is on the corner of Southfield Road’s junction with Woodlands Road, Middlesbrough, and can be seen by the passing public. Other Teesside students will be joining as guest presenters throughout the 24-hour marathon broadcast.

The public can donate and e-mail their music requests at www.justgiving.com/utrn. The station can be heard on the internet at www.utrn.co.uk.

Angela Ferguson, Director of the University’s Media Centre, said: ‘We’re looking for the public to donate as much as possible, the sky’s the limit. And if people e-mail their requests now they’ll be ready to go on air. Any music style at all, and if we don’t have the requested song at hand, we’ll find it! We’ve also been offered support from local businesses, such as free food and drink for the presenters, which is fantastic.’

One of the DJs, Adam Wilkinson, 21, from County Antrim, said: ‘It’s going to be great fun, a good way to raise money for Children in Need. I’d better acquire a taste for coffee now and start to drink it well in advance!’
