Jannicke launches her design career

23 December 2008

Jannicke Rogne was inspired to move to Middlesbrough from her native Norway, after hearing a talk from a visiting Teesside design lecturer.

The move paid off, as Jannicke graduated from Teesside with a BA (Hons) Product Design. She now works back in Norway as an industrial designer and project leader, for Norsap, a company who design helmsmen chairs and other boat equipment for supply ships, yachts and leisure boats.

Jannicke, 27, is originally from Longva, a small island on Norway’s west coast. She first moved to Oslo and started work as a store person at IKEA. At the same time, Jannicke enrolled at a local college on a design foundation course, where she heard a talk from guest speaker Paul Denison, one of the University’s design lecturers.

Loved Tees Valley Jannicke said: ‘Hearing Paul talk about the University of Teesside helped me decide to move to Middlesbrough. I loved everything about being in the Tees Valley. Not just seeing a new town, but learning a new language and culture and a way of living which is quite different to Norway. The degree was a brilliant experience, it allowed me to work much more independently, but the tutors were also there to help if we needed them.’

She started her job with Norsap in August, a company based in Kristiansand, in southern Norway. Jannicke added: ‘I really enjoy the job, there are lots of challenges and I get to work with other Norwegian designers. The Teesside degree has helped me a lot, particularly when it comes to problem solving and writing design briefs.’
