Artistic Ajoy returns home for exhibition

28 January 2009

Ajoy Kumar returned to his hometown in India to exhibit artwork he completed while studying here.

Ajoy now works in the School of Computing as a learning material developer for 3D animation. He graduated last year with a BA (Hons) Digitial Character Animation.

A selection of his artwork, much of it completed during his degree course was included in a recent exhibition at the Nanappa Art Gallery in his hometown of Trivandrum in southern India.

It is the third time that Ajoy has exhibited his paintings at the gallery since 1994. His work was also displayed in Abu Dhabi in 2004 where he worked in the Ministry of Public Relations.

Ajoy, 38, who lives in Middlesbrough, began studying 3D animation in India in 1992, before travelling to Scotland just over four years ago to complete a Higher National Certificate in Animation.

Teesside’s great reputation for animation He said: ‘While I was there I heard about Teesside’s great reputation for animation and was able to gain second year entry on to the degree course at Teesside.’

His artwork featured in the exhibition is all painted using acrylics and is linked to the character development work of his animation degree.

Ajoy said: ‘It was really great to go back to my hometown and the place where I first became interested in animation to hold the exhibition. It also allowed those who taught me art in India to see how my work has developed.

‘It’s very important to develop skills and drawing as it is a vital part of using the technology in animation. Technology is the tool but you need drawing skills too.’
