Solicitor General to give guest lecture

Vera Baird QC, Solicitor General and MP for Redcar, will deliver a guest lecture at the University.

The Solicitor General will speak on the new Equalities Bill which she aims to take through Parliament in the Spring. The aim of the Bill is to promote fairness and equality of opportunity and to tackle disadvantage and discrimination.

The School of Social Sciences & Law has invited the Solicitor General to give the guest lecture from 11.00am to 12.45pm on Friday 13 February in the Centuria Building.

The lecture, which is open to the public, will also be of interest to law, politics or sociology students. Places must be booked by contacting Cath Crosby on 01642 384097 or by emailing c.crosby@tees.ac.uk

Vera was elected MP for Redcar in 2001 and was appointed Solicitor General by Gordon Brown in 2007. As a criminal defence barrister she has been involved in key civil liberties cases and landmark cases involving battered women who kill. She became a QC in 2000.
