Marek motors back to Middlesbrough

20 February 2009

A successful graduate who designed a car for a James Bond movie returned to Teesside to share his expertise with students.

Marek Reichman, Director of Design for car manufacturer Aston Martin, spent the day with BA (Hons) Product Design students - and he also brought an Aston Martin car along with him.

Twenty years ago Marek graduated from the former Teesside Polytechnic with a first class BA (Hons) Industrial Design. He was awarded an Honorary Master of Science Degree in 2006 and his talents were viewed by millions of cinema goers worldwide when he designed the DBS car from Daniel Craig’s debut as James Bond in Casino Royale.

During his visit to Teesside, Marek gave a presentation to the students, entitled Aston Martin: A Timeless Design.

Inspiring students towards a bright future

Speaking of his return to Teesside, Marek, 42, said: ‘I had no idea when I was a 19-year-old student here in the 80s that I’d be coming back to meet a future generation of Teesside designers and give them advice.

‘I love coming back here, it’s right that I give a little bit back from industry and show how education is the future. It’s also important as I’ll be old one day and will hopefully be buying these students’ future products, so I’d like to make sure they look good.’

Students who spent the day with Marek described it as an inspiring and motivating experience.

Mark Freary, Subject Leader in Product Design, said: ‘It was fantastic to have Marek back here. When he said he wanted to spend the day with our students it was an offer we couldn’t refuse.’
