Treasured trophy back at Teesside

16 March 2009

Our sporting students are celebrating a victory over Sunderland which saw them win the coveted Tees Wear Varsity trophy.

The Tees Wear Varsity is an annual clash between Teesside and Sunderland universities which involves students competing in a range of sports, including football, hockey, netball, cheerleading, freestyle dance, rugby, badminton and swimming.

After a tough day of competition, Teesside were pronounced winners, with a score of thirteen-and-a-half, to Sunderland’s eight-and-a-half.

A number of notable successes saw our women’s rugby team winning 35 - 0 and our men’s rugby team securing an impressive 36 - 5 victory. All Teesside badminton teams were victorious and both netball teams won their matches. Our cheerleading club also put on a fantastic display to run out winners.

The best yet Nat Broom, Student Activities Officer, said: ‘I have been involved in five Tees Wear Varsities in my time at Teesside and I can honestly say this was the best. It was a fantastic day with a brilliant atmosphere throughout, despite fierce competition. All of our sports teams did us proud.

‘I’d also like to commend the University of Sunderland on the spirit in which they played and dealt with defeat. We’re absolutely thrilled to have the Tees Wear Varsity trophy back at Teesside.’
