We help budding reporters make the news

19 March 2009

Budding young reporters made the headlines at a special News Day at the University.

Schools across the country took part in the BBC News Day, which involved 12 to 14-year-olds working to meet a deadline to create print, television and radio news reports.

School of Arts & Media Our School of Arts & Media supported a team of 30 pupils from Conyers School in Yarm and English Martyrs School in Hartlepool, who visited the University to put together their news stories.

Each of the two schools have been working on their news stories since January and were represented by 15 pupils at Teesside on 26 March to work as a combined team on the News Day.

Bethany Usher, Senior Lecturer in Journalism at the University, said: 'Not only does the BBC News Day give school children the experience of working in a busy multimedia journalism environment, it also enables them to publicise the important work and events going on in their school.

'What goes on behind the scenes in our nation’s schools is often unseen and unreported, when in fact a lot of events are extremely newsworthy. It is great to be able to encourage the next generation to explore the issues which are important to them, and to give them a real taste of working in media.

'Who knows, one of these pupils might come to study multimedia journalism at the University and go on to be the next John Simpson or Kate Adie. The BBC News Days could be the first step to an amazing career.'
