Musician to lead journey into the blues

16 April 2009

Acclaimed blues musician Roger Sutcliffe is to host a lunchtime workshop with a difference.

Roger will present a personalised history of the blues, showing slides of the people and events which have inspired his own interest in the musical genre.

But instead of playing recordings from the various performers featuring in his presentation, Roger will sing all the songs himself.

The event, Delta Blues Story, takes place from 1.00pm to 2.00pm on Wednesday 22 April in the Phoenix Building. There’s no need to book and admission is free.

Five decades of music Roger became involved in the folk and blues scene when he was a music student in London during the mid-1960’s. He set up a folk song club at that time and was also hitch-hiking to play at clubs across the country.

He later became a leading member of the Topic Folk Club in Bradford and went on to get to know the many American musicians who were touring Britain at that time. In the mid-1970’s he became involved in the German folk music scene and has continued to travel there ever since. In more recent years he has toured Mississippi, Louisiana and Tennessee in America. He continues to teach guitar.

The event is being held as part of the Culture on Campus series of events taking place at the University. For further details contact j.webster@tees.ac.uk.
