Helping the environment sounds great

16 April 2009

Our Students’ Union has been awarded a prestigious accreditation for its efforts to help the environment.

The Sound Environmental Impact Awards recognised the Students’ Union’s efforts to run a more environmentally sustainable work place and raise environmental awareness amongst students.

The awards, run by the National Union of Student Services Limited, (NUSSL), is an accreditation scheme to encourage Students’ Unions to do all they can to help the environment.

Teesside collected a Bronze for an entry from the Sound Impact Working Group, made up of elected officers and staff, which detailed efforts to reduce the amount of waste generated and the energy used by lighting, computers and other electrical equipment.

There was also praise for campaigns and publicity encouraging students to be greener and the successful lobbying of the University to increase the number of recycling bins and collections in the building.

Committed to raising awareness Mark Gillespie, Communications Officer at the Students’ Union who has led on Sound Impact, said: ‘We recognise the huge importance of limiting this organisation’s impact on the environment.

‘We are committed to using our unique ability to reach students to raise their environmental awareness.

‘The campaign is still only really in its infancy but it’s great to have our excellent start recognised in this way and I would hope we can make the Students’ Union even greener in the year ahead.’
