Our facilities are voted second best in the country

25 June 2009

Facilities at Teesside have clinched second place in a popular national review – with only Oxford being rated better.

The prestigious accolade came thanks to rave student reviews on the website Whatuni.com.

In addition, the Students’ Union has soared into the site’s top ten ratings.

The Whatuni website is run by Hotcourses and attracts over two million hits per year. The site includes over 7,000 reviews and ratings written by past and present students about their university experiences.

Each review consists of 10 categories covering different aspects of University life, ranging from accommodation, to clubs and societies, to course and lecturers. The student reviewers rate their institutions from one to ten in each category, ten being the rating of highest quality.

The Whatuni Student Choice Awards are given to the institutions that have achieved the highest average score in each category.

Teesside is rated second UK University in the Uni Facilities category, and in the top ten for the Students ’ Union category. Reviews are published on the site as useful guidance for future students.

One student wrote of Teesside’s facilities: ‘Where to start, the facilities at the library are really good with helpful, friendly staff, staff at the university gym are helpful and help you with any problems you may have.’

Creating a welcoming and positive environment Professor Graham Henderson, the University’s Vice-Chancellor, said: ‘I am delighted that the University’s students have given such favourable reviews to give Teesside these high placings on the Whatuni website.

The whole University community strives to deliver a welcoming and positive environment for students and this is reflected in the student reviews.’

Tom Cawkwell, Students’ Union President, added: ‘It’s fantastic to receive recognition from whatuni.com as we take great pride in our Students’ Union.

'We are constantly maintaining and upgrading our services to meet the ever changing needs of the diverse student population we have here at Teesside. To make a top ten in a poll conducted by such a popular website is extremely satisfying and encouraging. We will use this as a benchmark and continue to improve.’
