Click to switch on to University’s radio station

01 October 2009

Switched on design student Craig Wright came up with a winning new identity for the University’s radio station Click.

The final year BA (Hons) Graphic Design student created the name and logo for Click, which is on air from Monday 12 October.

The station was previously known as UTRN but the station’s producers felt a new name was needed following the recent launch of Teesside University’s new identity.

To celebrate the launch of Click, 500 balloons were released outside the University’s Library as part of a competition to see which balloon travels the furthest.

Students put their details on labels attached to the balloons. A prize of unlimited cinema visits for a year at Cineworld in Middlesbrough is on offer for the student whose balloon travels the furthest by the end of October.

Time to rebrand Dominic Dunn, the radio station’s Assistant Producer, said: 'We decided that with the recent name change of the University we would rebrand the radio station, running a competition to involve students too. We received around 40 entries, with a number of them potentially winning designs, but after much deliberation, we decided to go for Craig’s design.'

Craig, 21, of Newcastle, said: 'I was involved in designing posters for the launch of UTRN so as soon as I heard there was a competition to design a new logo for the station I went back to ideas I’d been working on to develop them further.

'The curved design comes from the idea of representing radio waves, while I decided on the name Click after going through numerous words associated with radio. Click links with the idea of switching on a radio, buttons are clicked to switch something on and it’s catchy.'

He added: 'I’m really proud that my design has been chosen and it's exciting to know that my design will be seen around campus.'

Click, which broadcasts from Aurora House on campus, is aimed at students and staff with programmes focusing on campus life, events happening across the region and primarily music.

The station was launched in January 2008 and is streamed live through the University’s online network. It can be accessed through www.clickteesside.com, with live broadcasts due to begin from Monday 12 October.
