Teesside’s student radio station has clicked nationally

03 November 2009

The University’s student radio station Click has been shortlisted for a national award.

Click is in the running for the Chart Show of the Year accolade at the national Student Radio Association’s Awards, which are announced on Tuesday 24 November in London.

The Student Radio Association chart is broadcast nationally to over 50 student stations, with each university taking its turn to host the show. Click has been shortlisted for the award along with five other universities.

Click’s shortlisting follows Teesside’s success in being named University of the Year in the Times Higher Education Awards in October.

Teesside hosted the Chart Show back in June – when the station was still known by its previous name UTRN. Click changed its name from UTRN as the station’s producers felt a new name was needed following the recent launch of Teesside’s new identity.

Final year BA (Hons) Graphic Design student Craig Wright, 21, of Newcastle, won a competition to create the new name and logo for Click. The launch of Click was celebrated with the release of 500 balloons outside the University’s Library, as part of a competition to see which balloon travels the furthest.

Brilliant news Dominic Dunn, the station’s Assistant Producer, said: ‘This is brilliant news for the station and a real tribute to the students who give up their time to support radio here at Teesside.

‘The awards are judged by industry professionals and Radio 1 is supporting and presenting the awards this year, so even being shortlisted for the award is fantastic news and will put Teesside on the map for quality broadcasting.’

David McPhee, the station’s Technical Director, added: ‘This fantastic news is a real testament to the effort Dominic and the students put into the station, which is becoming a very real addition to the campus.’

Click, which broadcasts from Aurora House on campus, is aimed at students and staff with programmes focusing on campus life, events happening across the region and primarily music.

The station was launched in January 2008 and is streamed live through the University’s online network. It can be accessed through www.clickteesside.com.
