Volunteering is taking me to the top

09 November 2009

A sporting student is using the volunteering experience he has gained at Teesside to help him become a coach to top athletes.

Shane Hassall completed a BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise (Coaching Science) and is now working towards a MSc Strength and Conditioning.

During his time at Teesside, Shane was heavily involved with Sports Universities North East England (SUNEE), a scheme designed to transform the delivery of sport across the region. He now has an internship with the University’s Strength and Conditioning Coach, Matt Wright, allowing him to work towards his UKSCA accreditation, which will give him the chance to work with top athletes.

Shane said: ‘I did a lot of volunteering with SUNEE, initially working with hard to reach groups and homeless groups. I also did a lot of work with gifted and talented and that, amongst other things, lead me to get involved with Matt.

‘I have thoroughly enjoyed my time with SUNEE. It has taught me how to work with a diverse range of people.’
