Be creative in managing people

18 January 2010

Jazz and drama might seem like an unusual recipe for a breakfast business briefing – but that’s exactly what is being served up by Teesside University.

Leaders and senior professionals looking to be more creative in managing their workforce are attending the free creative leadership business breakfast briefing from 7.30am to 10.00am on Wednesday 10 February.

Teesside is establishing a growing reputation nationally as ‘The University for Business’ and won the Times Higher Education Outstanding Business Engagement Initiative Award as well as being the publication’s University of the Year Award.

The creative business breakfast event includes coffee and refreshments on arrival.

Two examples will be showcased:

>Jazz management development workshops in which Business School principal lecturer and jazz band leader Noel Dennis investigates the dynamics of jazz improvisation and its relevance to organisations, particularly in developing creativity within a business. He will be joined by international jazz musician and educator Pete Churchill.

>Leading roles where Sharon Paterson, Assistant Dean in the School of Arts & Media and former actress, explains how her performance masterclasses for leaders and managers use theatre and drama to explore key issues in leadership and management.

'All businesses can benefit from enhanced creativity Noel said: 'All businesses can benefit from enhanced creativity, especially in times of economic decline. In this session we will demonstrate the lessons that can be learned from the jazz group and the ways improvisation can enhance the performance of organisations.'

Sharon said: 'As part of the University’s commitment to helping individuals and businesses through the recession we’re offering innovative management development sessions, some using inventive methods to explore key issues in leadership and management. These programmes are ideal for leaders and senior professionals. They’re interactive, challenging and focused, and are perfect for those who are committed to learning new techniques to improve performance.'

As well as viewing the presentations about the new masterclasses, the briefing offers an opportunity to meet staff and academics involved in the sessions and network with fellow participants.
