Netballers clinch league title

09 March 2010

Our netball team are celebrating after winning the league title in style.

The Students’ Union netball first team won the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) league title with two matches to spare.

In a remarkable season they won seven of their eight matches and clocked up a plus 198 goal difference to clinch the trophy.

Among the most impressive victories was a 59 – 18 thrashing of Sunderland at home and an away victory by 32 – 19 over Sheffield, which finally secured the coveted trophy.

Jo Wilson, Chair of the Netball Club, said: ‘We’re all thrilled that all our team work and the collective quality we have as a club and team has shone through so much this season.

‘I think the win at Sheffield was particularly memorable as they were a top flight team last season and we probably started as underdogs, but every match has been great and all ten members of the first team should be so proud of themselves.’

Setting an example with silverware Nat Broom, Student Activities Officer at the Students’ Union, added: ‘It’s great to have some silverware on Teesside and hopefully other clubs can follow in the netball team’s footsteps before the end of the BUCS season.

‘I’m incredibly proud of all their effort and how brilliantly they have played all season. Jo Wilson deserves a lot of the credit for the club’s overall success this year but, most importantly, well done to everyone involved in the team.’

The netball club have also been active off the pitch throughout the year with many members helping to raise funds for charity and their club with activities in the Students’ Union and out in the community with a tournament for primary schools.
