Student wins silver on her karate debut

25 March 2010

A law student has won a silver medal in her first ever competitive karate competition.

Alex Caswell, 21, triumphed at the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) Championships after only taking up karate two years ago.

She joined the University’s karate club earlier this year and came within just a point of clinching gold after a superb series of performances and a hard fought final at the event which took place in Sheffield between 10 and 14 March.

Alex, who is studying LLB (Hons) Law, said: ‘I was pleasantly surprised to win the silver and to come so close to winning the gold, especially as the girl I was against in the final was such tough competition.

‘I really enjoy karate and winning the medal has given me the motivation to keep working to improve - I don’t think it will be the last time I compete.’

Enjoying championship success Nat Broom, Student Activities Officer at the University Students’ Union, added: ‘It’s always particularly nice to see sportsmen and women who are making their competitive debut do so well and Alex is clearly another of the many talented people we have representing Teesside Sport at the moment.

‘It’s obviously most important that students who get involved in clubs or societies simply enjoy it and get what they want from participating, but it’s also wonderful when they’re able to step it up a level and enjoy championship success.’
