Changing rooms for University volunteers

12 April 2010

Volunteers from Teesside University gave a style makeover to a centre in Redcar for people with learning and physical disabilities.

The 20-strong team spent a day at the Grenfell Club in Redcar, where they redecorated rooms and then organised a party for club members.

The participants are all aspiring managers completing a Leadership and Management Programme as part of the various roles they work in at the University.

The team were set a budget to buy food and party decorations to throw a party to round off the day.

Becky Robson, of the University’s Staff Development team, said: 'It was an exciting challenge for the staff members taking part, as it provided an opportunity for them to enhance and put into practice the skills they have learned as part of their Leadership and Management Programme.

'They were only briefed about what the task involved on the day itself, so they needed to really think on their feet to organise and co-ordinate everything to ensure it all went to plan.'

Becky added: 'It has also provided an opportunity to involve the staff in the wider community too.'

Ann Milne, of The Grenfell Club, said: 'The Grenfell Club is a special place where people with learning difficulties can socialise in safety. Money for our charity is tight just now so we were delighted by the help offered by our friends from Teesside University to brighten up the club premises.'
