Conference to explore what matters to business

Aubrey Joachim, President of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) is the keynote speaker at Teesside University’s Business School’s annual conference.

Aubrey Joachim is CIMA’s newly elected president with global responsibility for the organisation. He is based in Australia and has enjoyed a successful international career in finance and accounting.

Aubrey is now a management coach, mentor and management training provider to companies in Asia, the Middle East, Africa and Australia. His talk is entitled ‘Examining the global perspectives for business professionals.’ The conference is on Tuesday 18 May from 9.00am to 12 noon in the Europa Building off Woodlands Road, Middlesbrough. Alastair Thomson, Dean of Teesside University’s Business School, said: 'We are pleased to play a major part in the business landscape of the Tees Valley. And through our annual conference we are delighted with this year’s top speakers, who will give their perspectives on the issues that matter to the business community.'

The other two conference speakers are Bryan K Sanderson, CBE and Adrian Evans, the Business School’s Director of Corporate Programmes.

Bryan’s former roles include Managing Director of BP, Chairman of Standard Chartered Bank, Co-chairman of the Department of Trade & Industry’s Asia Task Force and Chairman of the Learning and Skills Council. He was awarded a CBE in 1999 and is currently a Chairman of BUPA, a Trustee of The Economist and a director of Durham County Cricket Club. His opening talk is entitled ‘A look back at business lessons learned from the chemical industry.’ Adrian Evans’ talk is ‘Investing in people development.’ At the recent Times Higher Education Awards not only did Teesside University win the coveted accolade of University of the Year, the University also achieved the award for Outstanding Employer Engagement. This was in respect of the Foundation Degree in Leadership and Management created in collaboration with the North East Chamber of Commerce.

Adrian led the team that created this award-winning programme and he will talk about what winning the award means to the Business School and the importance of continuous development of staff, especially during periods of economic downturn.
