Vice-Chancellor congratulates our sporting stars

Over 50 students who have enjoyed a hugely successful sporting year celebrated with a special reception hosted by Vice-Chancellor Professor Graham Henderson.

It has been a glittering year for sport at Teesside, with various teams winning a string of titles and cups, as well as a number of individual successes in athletics, boxing and karate.

All the University’s sport stars were invited to the ceremony at the Students’ Union to receive a personal congratulations from Professor Henderson.

He said: ‘I am absolutely delighted to share in the success of our students and to be able to meet them personally and congratulate them on behalf of the whole University community.’

It’s a treble The women’s football team had a remarkable year, completing the treble. They won the British Universities League and Cup before finishing top of their Sunday league.

Women’s rugby and netball were both crowned respective champions of their British Universities Leagues, while the men’s futsal team became British champions after their competition at the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) Indoor Championship.

At the same tournament Teesside showed outstanding individual strength amongst its elite athlete squad with Jonathan Taylor, BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise (Applied Sport Science), winning 1,500 metres gold and Ricky Stephenson, also BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise (Applied Sport Science), taking gold in the 3,000 metres. Stacey Smith, BSc (Hons) Sports Therapy, won silver in the 1,500 metres.

Newcomer Alex Caswell, LLB (Hons) Law, competed in her first ever karate competition and scooped a silver medal.
