Over 200 guests gathered at the University for the annual Teesside Business School conference with keynote speaker Aubrey Joachim, President of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA).

Aubrey Joachim is CIMA’s president with global responsibility for the organisation. He is based in Australia and has enjoyed a successful international career in finance and accounting.

Aubrey is now a management coach, mentor and management training provider to companies in Asia, the Middle East, Africa and Australia. His talk was entitled ‘Examining the global perspectives for business professionals.’

The other two conference speakers were Bryan K Sanderson, CBE and Adrian Evans, the Business School’s Director of Corporate Programmes.

Bryan K Sanderson’s former roles include Managing Director of BP, Chairman of Standard Chartered Bank, Co-chairman of the Department of Trade & Industry’s Asia Task Force and Chairman of the Learning and Skills Council.

He was awarded a CBE in 1999 and is currently a Chairman of BUPA, a Trustee of The Economist and a director of Durham County Cricket Club. His opening talk was entitled ‘A look back at business lessons learned from the chemical industry.’ Adrian Evans’ talk was ‘Investing in people development.’ At the recent Times Higher Education Awards not only did Teesside University win the coveted accolade of University of the Year, the University also achieved the award for Outstanding Employer Engagement. This was in respect of the Foundation Degree in Leadership and Management created in collaboration with the North East Chamber of Commerce.

Adrian led the team that created this award-winning programme and he described what winning the award meant to the Business School and the importance of continuous development of staff, especially during periods of economic downturn.

Following the conference, guests enjoyed a buffet in the Students’ Union with jazz music supplied by the Noel Dennis band. Noel is a Teesside graduate and Principal lecturer in Marketing in the Business School.
