Big screen beckons for talented film makers

12 August 2010

Talented film makers are to have their work shown on big screens across the country after impressing at a regional showcase.

Films made by Teesside graduates will be played on the daily content of the BBC’s 19 big screens, which span from Edinburgh to Plymouth.

They were chosen following a Concept Film Night, ran by the Institute of Digital Innovation (IDI), and will now be aired nationally for a 12 month period.

Christine Wilson, Conference and Events Co-ordinator at the IDI, said: ‘Having films chosen to be shown on the 19 screens across the country is fantastic for the film makers of the region and demonstrates the high quality of work being produced here.’

Concept Film Night is a quarterly event at the University which gives film makers the opportunity to show their work to an audience, meet new contacts and network with industry professionals.

Linking up with the BBC For the July event, the work was shown on the BBC big screen in Centre Square, where around 70 people watched a series of 12 films. The BBC then chose four of the films for nationwide screening.

They are Tom Marshall’s film ‘My Friend Michael Sniff’, about a boy with an imaginary friend. Tom graduated from Teesside with a BA (Hons) Television Production Professional Practice.

Andrew Johnson, who graduated with an MA Computer Animation, will have his animated short film ‘The Stalking’ shown, which is about a farmer who becomes the victim of an uninvited obsession.

Arcus Studios’ animated ‘Snowflake and Tinboy’ was also selected. Arcus Studios is made up of three experimental animators, including Teesside graduate James Taylor, MA Computer Animation.

The fourth film chosen is silent comedy ‘The Piano’ by Earthbeat Theatre Group, an independent organisation based in Saltburn which has 12 members.
