Adam’s designs keep on shining through

24 August 2010

The UK’s bars, nightclubs, restaurants and hotels could display shining new features in the future, thanks to the designs of a Teesside University student.

Adam Gilbert, 24, from Chesham, is a student on the MSc (Design) and for his final project explored the use of RENOLIT decorative films.

This is produced by RENOLIT Cramlington Ltd who are part of the RENOLIT Group, an international manufacturer of plastic films and related products for technical applications. Adam was allocated the live project by his tutor. Adam said: 'We wanted to find new applications for the film so RENOLIT could showcase it. I did lots of experiments, folding and stretching the PVC and then shining a light through it. This created a really interesting effect by shining the light from behind the film, through a pattern.

'The RENOLIT product involves this translucent property of the film to produce big decorative light. This could be displayed in bars, clubs, restaurants and hotels and the pattern can be changed for the different locations. I’d love to see the design taken up by the company.' Best in show prize The designs proved fruitful, as Adam’s design achieved the best in show prize at the first MSc Design show, which was sponsored by the regional development agency One North East.

Adam said: 'I was ridiculously surprised to win the best in show as I was really impressed by all of the other students’ work. I’m now aiming for a career in product design; I’m a big cyclist so a bike firm would be my dream job.'
