Free public lectures from University historian

Dr Joan Heggie, a Research Fellow at Teesside University, is to give a series of free public lectures at Middlesbrough’s mima during October.

In her talks Dr Heggie will focus on women from Middlesbrough’s history, the British Steel Archives and artist Viva Talbot’s links with the area’s industrial heritage.

All the lectures are free and take place from 12.30pm to 1.30pm at mima in central Middlesbrough. Dr Heggie’s first lecture Women from Middlesbrough’s history can be heard on Wednesday 6 October.

Her second talk focuses on the British Steel Archives, an extensive collection of photographs, maps, ledgers, deeds and other documents about the region’s iron and steel industries. It can be heard on Wednesday 13 October.

Her final lecture, Viva Talbot - her life, art and ties to Teesside’s industry, can be heard on Wednesday 27 October. Viva Talbot was a Yorkshire artist who created hundreds of woodblock prints depicting the process of making steel. Her work was carried out during the 1930s when it was almost unknown for women to be allowed access to the steelworks.

Dr Heggie, a Research Fellow in Teesside University’s School of Social Sciences & Law is also a member of the University’s Social Futures Institute. Her research interests include gender and sexuality in the workplace, feminist debates on women’s role in war and the military, women’s history and feminist methodology.
