Back to the lecture theatre for hospital consultant Andrew

22 December 2010

Hospital consultant Andrew Adair is now involved in teaching the medical course he came to Teesside to complete.

Andrew, 38, of Hartlepool, is a Consultant in Emergency Medicine in the Accident & Emergency unit at James Cook University Hospital.

He graduated from Teesside with a Postgraduate Certificate (PgC) in Medical Ultrasound, winning the prize of best overall student on his course. He is also now getting involved in teaching the PgC course.

Andrew said: ‘We teach ultrasound to the registrars at the hospital and I’d already completed two levels, but to be able to teach I needed to complete the PgC.

‘The quality of the course at Teesside was great and the facilities for students are really good. As I was working full-time I didn’t have much time to take advantage of the recreational facilities on campus, but I know people who got involved in the rowing club and used the climbing wall.

‘Combining work and study can be hard, but there are a lot of educational links to medicine, so returning to study wasn’t too much of a shock having completed the exams to become a consultant.’

The course comprised lectures, assessment and exams at the University, along with practical modules in scanning which Andrew completed at James Cook University Hospital.

Continuing education The former pupil of Henry Smith School in Hartlepool and Hartlepool Sixth Form is now planning to progress towards the Postgraduate Diploma (PgD) in Medical Ultrasound.

It was Andrew’s first time as a student at Teesside, but he said, ‘People often feel the need to leave their home town to study, but with a place such as Teesside University on offer nearby there really is no need to go away.

‘I’d certainly recommend Teesside University. The campus and the facilities for students are great.’
