Countdown to Darlington campus

07 January 2011

Darlington is set to become a University town in 2011 when Teesside opens a £13m five-storey campus this summer.

Work on the new campus is nearing completion and Professor Graham Henderson CBE, the University’s Vice-Chancellor, visited the site to see firsthand how it is progressing.

Professor Henderson, who was awarded the CBE in the New Year’s Honours list for services to local and national higher education, said he is looking forward to the exciting new venture in Darlington.

He added: ‘It is excellent to see our new Darlington campus taking shape and I am sure that it will be an excellent addition to the town.

‘This move to develop a University presence in the town is a pivotal part of the University’s plans for the future. All of us are very much looking forward to the exciting new higher education opportunities that will be able to be made available later this year to add to the Teesside University provision already being delivered through the University and our close partners Darlington College.’

A stimulating teaching environment The high-quality, 4,000 sq metre, undergraduate and postgraduate teaching building, is alongside Darlington College at Central Park, Haughton Road. It will provide a flexible and stimulating teaching environment for both teaching and conference activity.

Once opened, the campus will enable a significant expansion of the range of higher education courses available in Darlington. It is funded by the University, One North East, via Tees Valley Unlimited, and Darlington Council and is also supported by Darlington College and Tees Valley Regeneration.

Durham-based construction company Morgan Sindall is delivering the high-quality building for the University. A major feature of the scheme is the creation of a ship’s fin, made out of a sub-structure of metal and a finished elevation treatment of glazing and brickwork.
