Japanese photographer unveils exhibition at Teesside

An exhibition by internationally renowned photographer Ikuko Tsuchiya can be viewed at Teesside University.

Ikuko, who is orignally from Japan, has lectured at Teesside University since 2008.

Her exhibition will be open to the public in the University’s Constantine Gallery, ground floor, Middlesbrough Tower, from 2.00pm on Wednesday 26 January.

The exhibition will then be open Monday to Friday, 9.00am to 4.00pm, until Monday 21 February.

Observer Hodge Photographic Award 2000 Ikuko studied film-making in Japan before coming to England to complete an MA Photography. She won the Observer Hodge Photographic Award 2000 and continued her studies, with her research focusing on using photography as a therapeutic agent in healthcare.

She completed a project for Northumbria Healthcare NHS Trust documenting what happens in hospitals in that region. Her work culminated in a book of 70 images from the project, along with a touring exhibition which also went to Japan.

Her teaching at Teesside on the BA (Hons) Fine Art at Teesside University involves working with students to show them how the disciplines of photography can contribute to their work.
